Delhi pollution crisis: Tips to protect yourself from smog

As the national capital once again grapples with its annual air pollution crisis, a thick layer of white smog has enveloped the city, bringing with it numerous health hazards. Some of the reasons for the deteriorating air quality in Delhi are stubble burning, vehicular emissions, burning of crackers and garbage waste, and emissions from coal-fired industries.

Smog is the combination of smoke and fog. Exposure to smog can cause many health problems such as difficulty in breathing, sore throat, chest infections, aggravation of asthma, etc. People are trying every possible hack and home remedies to prevent themselves from the ill effects of smog. Many have done their bit by changing humidifiers at home to the use of essential oils.

Even as the governments and the judiciary mull ways to tackle the problem, we have listed some of the practices that will help you protect yourself against smog naturally:

Stay Aware

The foremost thing to consider is to stay aware of the outside smog condition. Listen to weather forecasts and then plan your activities accordingly. For example, in case of extreme smog conditions, opt for work from home, run group errands or carpool, etc.

Drink Tulsi And Ginger Tea

This splendid drink helps improve respiratory health. Brew yourself a cup of Tulsi and ginger tea as it is known to enhance immunity, help fight cold and ease a cough. As a combination in tea, it can work wonders to counter the side effects of smog.

Turmeric Milk

The easy-to-make drink helps you fight the ill effects of smog. Not only is it an immunity booster, but it also improves respiratory health. Just boil a glass of milk and add one teaspoon of turmeric powder and drink it regularly.

Eat Jaggery

We all are well aware of ‘gur’ or jaggery and the health benefits associated with it. A few of the many benefits of eating jaggery include an enhanced immune system, weight loss, and improved overall health. Since it is a natural detoxifying food with the goodness of nutrients, it can be utilised in meals and beverages.

Wear Mask

It is important to wear a mask while  stepping outside. This safety gear has not only helped many during the pandemic but can also help during the deteriorating air quality/smog conditions. In case of severe smog, wearing a double mask is recommended. People suffering from asthma or respiratory problems should confine themselves to the four walls of their home as prevention is better than the cure.

Limit Outside Activities

In smog conditions, it is better to stay indoors. Activities like jogging, walking to the park or exercising outside should be stopped. Don’t even allow your kids to play outside and instead make them play indoor games. The same rules apply to the elderly. Don’t go out for a simple walk at night as well.

Include Omega-3 Fatty Acids/Vitamin C Rich Foods

Make sure to include foods rich in vitamin C and omega-3 fatty acids to build  a healthy immune system. Additionally, eliminate unhealthy carbohydrates , packaged foods, and sweet beverages.

Prevention is certainly better than cure.
