The number of vehicles on road has increased by many folds over the last decade and there have not been many steps to curb the same. All these situations have lead to serious health issues in Delhi NCR and a dying need for some serious steps to save the environment. Looking into the matter, the Delhi government has brought the odd even formula back, wherein cars plying on the roads move according to their number plates. The week is divided into odd and even days i.e. even day – Monday, Wednesday & Friday and odd days – Tuesday, Thursday & Saturday. Sunday is a free day where all vehicles are allowed on the road.
This way, there are only a certain percentage of cars seen on the road each day of the week that somehow helps control the contribution of vehicular pollution in the air. In the last two editions of ‘odd-even’ a vast difference in the pollution level was observed which is why the government went in for its third edition.
It was first introduced between January 1 and 15, 2016 under similar circumstances and gave amazing results. Living in Delhi is said to be the same as living in a gas chamber. This idea was taken from countries like Beijing, Mexico City, Santiago, Chile, Sao Paulo, Costa Rica, etc.
This encourages people take up public transport like buses, metro and also walk the distance that can easily be done. All the residents should come forward and pledge their inputs for the same and not let the pollution ruin their own health and for the coming generations. Every single effort counts when the situation has turned so bad. This is just a part of the whole picture as there are several other ways that are leading to increase in air pollution. So, plant more trees and opt for greener ways of living.
