Hima Das, the Indian sprinter has made it to the headlines after winning five gold medals in a month. She has her eyes set on winning the World Championship. With making the headlines about winning several competitions, she has received a lot of attention from the media.
The 19-year-old received a flood of congratulatory wishes after her latest gold medal win came at the Nove Mesto nad Metuji Grand Prix on Saturday in Prague, where she clocked the season’s perfect timing of 52.09 seconds, in the 400m race. With this recent win, she has broken her own personal best that is 50.79 seconds, that was recorded at the 2018 Asian Games.
No hurdle can stop Hima Das, the golden girl of India, in pursuing her dreams by claiming the fifth gold medal this month. India’s ‘Dhing Express’, as she is called, has made her country proud and is on her way to create history. Her unbelievable performance last month got her nationwide attention, also the social media is all filled with praise for her.
Everyone right from Bollywood to politics, have congratulated and sent her good wishes over the phone. President Ram Nath Kovind, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Sachin Tendulkar, Amitabh Bachchan and many others are proud of the talented golden girl.
Hima Das was born in a village called Kandhulimari, Dhing, a town, in the state of Assam. She is a farmer’s daughter and the youngest of five children. At first, she was interested in playing football, therefore she joined a public school in Dhing to learn the sport. As a young school-going girl, she dreamt of becoming a football player and often played the sport with boys at school.
It is said that it’s all destiny, at an early stage she realised that she couldn’t see herself playing for women’s football team in India. Soon, with her sports teacher Shamsul Hoque’s advice, she changed to sprint running.
She has made the country proud and is on her way to become a world champion. Hima Das was awarded the ‘Arjun Award,’ the highest award of the country, in 2018 by the president. She is the 2nd athlete from the state of Assam after Bhogeswar Baruah to win a gold medal at an International event. She has been appointed as the brand ambassador of sports by the Government of Assam.
As we know, Hima Das is only 19 years old and has already become India’s sprint sensation and has added value to the rich sporting culture. I hope that in the years to come we will hear more about this spinster from India. It is expected that she will win more medals for the country at the Tokyo Olympic, 2020.
