Faecal Transplants- The Key To Improving Gut Health

Our digestive system is dependent on healthy bacteria, as it absorbs the nutrients and efficiently digests food, but certain medical conditions could damage the healthy bacteria. Faecal transplant is the only way to make our gut healthy.

Process of Fecal Transplant

There are several ways of performing a faecal transplant, each with their benefits.

Colonoscopy

It is a process where it delivers a liquid stool directly into the large intestine through a colonoscopy. A tube is pushed into the entirety of the large intestine. Once the tube is withdrawn, it deposits the transplant into your intestine. Colonoscopy enables doctors to see several areas of the large intestine that could be damaged due to various underlying conditions.

Enema

Similar to the colonoscopy approach, through an enema, it introduces the transplant directly into the large intestine. You could be asked to lie on your side while the lower body is elevated. It makes it simpler for the transplant to reach the intestine. A lubricated enema tip is gently inserted into the rectum. The enema bag flows into the rectum. The process is less invasive than colonoscopies.

Nasogastric tube

A liquid stool preparation is sent to your stomach through a tube that runs via the nose. The tool travels to the intestine, via the stomach. You will be given a drug to make the stomach stop producing acids that could enable killing the helpful organisms in the transplant preparation.

The tube is then placed into the nose and then, a syringe is used to flush out the preparation, into the stomach.

Capsules

This is a new method that includes eating several pills consisting of a stool preparation. It is one of the least invasive procedures that can be done at home or a medical office.

Conditions of a faecal transplant

When it comes to having a faecal transplant, not everyone can have one, like for instance:

– Drugs that suppress the immune system

– HIV

– Liver disease like cirrhosis

– Recent bone marrow transplant

How about DIY faecal transplant?

Even though it may sound like a good idea, it is not advisable to do it yourself. There are certain reasons why like:

– one can easily put themselves at risk of getting a disease, without proper donor screening.

– Doctors are professionally trained in performing a faecal transplant.

Conclusion

Faecal transplants are highly promising in treating a range of conditions.
