Sunday morning came with a devastating news for ‘Friends’ fans across the globe – everyone’s favourite character from the sitcom, Chandler was found dead in a hot tub at his Los Angeles home.
Mathew Perry, 54, tragically passed away due to an apparent drowning. There have been no reports of drug involvement, and although authorities do not suspect foul play, prescription medications were reportedly discovered, according to TMZ.
The actor was renowned for his role as the quick-witted Chandler Bing in the the NBC network show that ran for a decade from 1994 to 2004, enjoying a 10-season run. He shared the screen with Jennifer Aniston, Courteney Cox, David Schwimmer, Matt LeBlanc, and Lisa Kudrow as his fellow co-stars.
In an ironic twist, the actor’s final Instagram post was seemingly taken in a hot tub. The image, shared on October 23, showed him enjoying the soothing warmth of the water under the moonlight. With his trademark humour, he captioned the photo with the words, “Oh, does the sensation of warm water swirling around make you feel good? I’m Mattman.”
Matthew Perry openly grappled with prolonged issues of alcohol and prescription drug misuse, offering candid insights into his struggles with addiction in his 2022 memoir, titled “Friends, Lovers and the Big Terrible Thing.”
Throughout his life, he entered rehabilitation programs a total of 15 times in an attempt to address his issues regarding drug abuse. In 2018, the consequences of his substance abuse led to a ruptured colon, and at that time, medical professionals gave him a mere 2% chance of survival.
Following the life-threatening incident, he remained in a coma for two weeks and endured five months in the hospital. For nine months, he had to rely on a colostomy bag as he navigated this frightening and challenging situation.
In his book, he dedicated his words to “all those who have endured” and delved into the topics of substance abuse and alcoholism. The prologue of his memoir says that, ‘I should be dead.’ He also recounted his numerous experiences with detoxification, which he underwent countless times, and the considerable financial investment, reaching into the millions, he made in repeated efforts to achieve sobriety.
The Terrific Piece Of Work by Matthew Perry
Chandler Takes A Bath
This particular ‘Friends’ episode centres on a straightforward idea, but Matthew Perry skilfully turns it into comedic brilliance. In this episode, Chandler initially expresses his dislike for taking bath, but when Monica prepares a bath for him, he unexpectedly finds great enjoyment in it. However, he struggles to replicate the same delightful experience by himself. It’s worth noting that Matthew Perry earned his sole Emmy nomination for his performance in this episode of Friends. This is also the very episode where Rachel and Ross reveal they’re having a baby.
When Everyone Finds Out
It was a pleasant surprise for people knowing about the evolving relationship between Monica and Chandler. It was an enjoyable and unexpected twist as Joey, Rachel, and Phoebe collaborate in a scheme to expose Chandler’s romantic involvement with Monica. Phoebe pretends to flirt with him, leading to some cringe-worthy moments of awkward banter, ultimately prompting Chandler to affectionately confess his love for Monica. This amusing confrontation culminates in a heartfelt declaration of love, making it one of the most memorable moments in the series. This pivotal moment solidifies their relationship, and Matthew Perry delivers an outstanding performance in this scene.
When Chandler Cried for the First Time
In the fifth season, Chandler’s childhood trauma is revealed that due to his emotionally distant upbringing, Chandler hasn’t shed tears since his childhood. His friends make various attempts to provoke his emotions, but he remains resolute. However, as a true and caring friend, he eventually breaks down in tears when commenting on the ongoing uncertainty of Ross and Rachel’s romantic relationship. Once Chandler’s tears begin to flow, they continue without restraint.
Chandler Ends His Relationship with Janice
Chandler faces the challenging task of ending his relationship with Janice, a recurring character in the show. This situation occurs multiple times in the series, but one of the most comical attempts happens during their initial breakup. In the episode, Chandler consumes increasing amounts of coffee as he becomes progressively more agitated and nervous. He attempts to explain his reasons for ending things with Janice. But Phoebe intervenes and save the day with her mindful approach.
The Chair Fight
Chandler and Joey’s comic interactions have left a lasting impression on fans. Despite their close friendship, they frequently irritate each other due to the clash between Joey’s laid-back attitude and Chandler’s quirky uptightness.
In an episode, tension escalates as the two roommates have a dispute over a chair in Monica and Rachel’s apartment. This disagreement occurs right when they should be getting ready to attend an event at Ross’s museum.
The dispute not only revolves around the chair but also spills over into their respective wardrobes, leading to hilariously entertaining outcomes.
This calls for a re-run of the show and enjoy the entertaining series with your loved one remembering the best of Chandler.
