Big Wins for India at Asian Games 2023

India achieved a significant milestone at the Hangzhou Asian Games by securing their 100th medal. Sonam Malik contributed to this achievement by winning a bronze medal in wrestling. Currently, they have received 91 medals and have an additional 9 medals confirmed, pending the determination of their specific colours – gold, silver, or bronze. India had already surpassed their previous best tally of 70 medals, and reaching the century mark makes these Games even more memorable. While this accomplishment may have seemed unlikely at the start of the Games, surprise victories in equestrian, sailing, and rowing, along with anticipated successes in shooting and athletics, have propelled India past the 100-medal mark well before the Games conclude.

At the 19th Asian Games 2023 in Hangzhou, China, India secured a total of 91 medals, comprising 21 gold, 33 silver, and 37 bronze medals. The primary contributors to India’s medal haul have been shooters and track and field athletes, who have won 22 and 29 medals respectively. Among these, shooters have claimed seven gold, nine silver, and six bronze medals in various events.

The remaining 14 gold medals have been distributed across various sports, including athletics, women’s cricket, equestrian, squash, archery, and tennis. In addition to athletics, India has also excelled in rowing and sailing, earning five and three medals respectively. Multiple medals have been achieved in equestrian, squash, boxing, roller skating, and tennis.

Furthermore, India has managed to secure medals in golf, cricket, table tennis, canoe sprint, sepaktakraw, and wushu, with each of these sports contributing at least one medal to India’s impressive tally.

In the ongoing Games, Indian shooters have been standout performers, with several athletes securing multiple medals. Esha Singh, a pistol shooter, stands out with an impressive achievement of four medals – one gold and three silver.

Aishwary Pratap Singh Tomar has also made a remarkable contribution, earning a total of four medals, which include two golds, one silver, and one bronze. Additionally, rifle shooter Ashi Chouksey has secured three medals, consisting of two silver medals and one bronze.

Guaranteed medals are up for grabs with final rounds still to be played in several events:

  • Compound Archery 3 Medals: Abhishek Verma is set to compete against Ojas Pravin Deotale in the men’s individual final, ensuring India takes home both gold and silver. In addition, Jyothi Surekha Vennam will participate in the women’s individual final, securing either a gold or silver medal.
  • Kabaddi – 2 Medals: Both the Indian men’s and women’s teams have advanced to the finals, making them contenders for medals.
  • Men’s Hockey – 1 Medal: The Indian men’s hockey team is gearing up for the final against Japan, striving to recapture the Asian Games gold and secure an Olympic qualification.
  • Badminton – 1 Medal: Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty are guaranteed at least a bronze medal and will face the Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik in the semifinal.
  • Men’s Cricket – 1 Medal: Ruturaj Gaikwad’s team has secured a place in the final with a comfortable nine-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the semifinal, setting up the opportunity to clinch the gold.
