We all eagerly wait for the monsoon season to arrive to enjoy a hot cup of coffee or tea with our favourite snack, but little do we have in our minds how this could be the potential season to fall sick. So, should we just sit ideally and not enjoy this season? Absolutely not, just keep these tips handy and you are ready to sail through this season.
During this season, water-borne diseases are highly prevalent. One can contract contagious infections and viruses, resulting in various health issues such as fever, influenza, and gastrointestinal problems.
To boost your health during the monsoon season, it’s essential to take extra care due to the increased risk of infections and health issues.
Here are some tips to help you stay healthy:
1. Use only clean water for drinking:
It is important to stay hydrated every season- be it summers, winter or monsoon, but it becomes crucial to drink clean water in the monsoon due to contamination by water sources, which heightens the risk of waterborne diseases. So, one should take precautions by using a water filter at home or boiling water regularly for drinking purposes. When traveling, it is advisable to carry your own drinking water or opt for sealed and packaged water when needed.
2. Say no to junk food:
One of the primary concerns in the monsoon season is to keep your eating habits clean, avoid street food, and opt for freshly cooked, homemade meals. Uncovered food should be strictly avoided as it is susceptible to contamination by harmful microorganisms, posing a greater risk of contracting infections. Make sure to wash fruits and vegetables thoroughly before consuming them.
3. Practice good hygiene:
Wash your hands frequently with soap and water, especially before eating or touching your face. Use hand sanitisers when soap and water are not available. Keep your living areas clean and maintain personal hygiene to prevent the spread of germs.
4. Boost your immune system:
Include immune-boosting foods in your diet, such as citrus fruits, green leafy vegetables, garlic, ginger, and turmeric. These foods can help strengthen your immune system and protect against infections. Include probiotic rich foods like curds, yoghurt, and buttermilk to support your health by improving gut health and nutrient absorption.
5. Engage in regular exercise:
Rain should never come between you and your exercise regime- try to switch to indoor exercises if outdoors is not possible, as one should stay true to their health following a good fitness regime. It helps improve blood circulation and triggers serotonin production, ultimately resulting in stronger immunity.
6. Stay away from dampness:
Dampness can lead to fungal infections, allergies, and respiratory problems. Keep your living spaces well-ventilated and use dehumidifiers if necessary. Don’t let your surroundings be a breeding ground for mosquitoes due to the increased risk of mosquito-borne illnesses like dengue and malaria. Use mosquito repellents, wear long-sleeved clothing, and sleep under mosquito nets to protect yourself.
So, it’s time to enjoy the drizzling out there but with just a few things to keep in mind for making the best out of this lovely weather.
Happy monsoon to all!
