ICC World Test Championship Final 2023: Shubman Gill Disappoints Fans

On Day 2 of the ICC World Test Championship (WTC) final against Australia at the Oval Ground in London, Team India’s opener Shubman Gill had a disappointing performance with the bat in the first innings. Despite hitting two impressive boundaries, the talented right-handed batter could only score 13 runs off 15 deliveries.

The ICC World Test Championship final 2023 is being played between India and Australia at the Kennington Oval Ground in London from June 7- 11.

At the Oval Ground, India has participated in 14 Test matches, achieving victory in two, facing defeat in five, and settling for a draw in seven matches. In their last tournament in 2021 at the Ovals, Team India won with a margin of 157-runs.

In the World Test Championship 2023 final, India was confident enough in the ace opening-batsman, who has been in fiery form this year. The player joined the Indian Cricket team for the WTC Finals soon after he made an extraordinary mark in the IPL 2023, scoring  890 runs in 17 matches.

Fans believe that Shubman Gill is believed to experience a moment of lapse in concentration in the seventh over, leading to poor decision-making. Despite his previous perfect performance during his brief time on the ground, Gill fell victim to the misleading visual impression created by Australian pacer Scott Boland. While he had successfully defended previous deliveries with ease, Boland intelligently pitched the ball marginally outside the off stump this time. Gill mistakenly expected the ball to move away, but instead, it sharply swung back inwards, crashing into his stumps.

The 23-year-old player was in disbelief. It took him a while to gather himself and move back to the dressing room at 13 runs off 15 balls. A similar video of Former Indian Skipper Virat Kohli is getting viral on the Internet and fans related that Virat Kohli once stood brain fade like Shubman Gill.

Gill’s failure dropped a bombshell as he recently scored three big centuries for runners-up Gujarat Titans (GT) in IPL 2023. The young player also emerged as the highest run-scorer in the latest edition of the T20 league.

Soon after his dismissal from the match, Twitter was flooded with trolling tweets and the toxic cricket fan base bombarded negative comments on Gill’s Instagram too.

This isn’t the first time the 23-year-old has faced negativity. The India opener, of Gujarat Titans, delivered an exceptional performance in the recent match at the M Chinnaswamy Stadium, scoring an unbeaten century of 104 runs off just 52 balls. Despite receiving accolades from the entire cricket community for his outstanding innings, he unfortunately encountered severe online abuse following RCB’s exit from the IPL tournament.
