13 Interesting Facts About T20 World Cup 

One of cricket’s most hotly-anticipated events, the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup is back with its seventh edition in UAE and Oman. Since its inception in 2007, the battle of the limited-overs format has been a blockbuster event for cricket fans. A total of 16 teams are facing off  this year, giving their best performance to win the prestigious title.

1. Fastest Century

Jamaican batter Chris Gayle holds the record of scoring the fastest T20 century. He achieved this feat against England in 2016 in just 48 balls. Another interesting fact is that he made 100 runs in just 57 balls on the board against South Africa in 2007.

2. Fastest 50 Runs

Yuvraj Singh scored the fastest 50 in just 12 balls against England in 2007.

3. 6 Consecutive Sixes In An Over

Adding one more feather to his cap, Yuvraj became the first player to hit six sixes in a row in an over. Those epic consecutive sixes are etched in every cricketing fan’s heart.

4. Highest Number Of Wickets

The leading wicket-taker in T20 World Cups is Shakib-al-Hasan with 41 wickets (Bangladesh). He has taken over the record of Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi, who had a record total of 39 wickets and is followed by Lasith Malinga (38) and Saeed Ajmal (36) in the respective tournaments.

5. Most Dismissals

Former Indian cricketer Mahendra Singh Dhoni has 32 dismissals to his name in the T20 World Cup. Dhoni is the only wicketkeeper to have scored 100 International stumpings in his cricketing career.

6. Most Wins/Losses

Sri Lanka has the most number of wins (22), whereas Bangladesh has a record of losing the most number of T20 matches (19).

7. Team To Enter Finals Twice

Sri Lanka remains the first team to play two T20 World Cup finals by winning in 2014 against India.

8. Highest Innings Total

Sri Lanka holds the T20 World Cup record for the highest inning total. In 2007, they had put up the highest total of 260/6 against Kenya. Interestingly, the latter  were  bowled out for 88 runs, and Sri Lanka won by 172 runs.

9. Captain For Most Matches

Mahendra Singh Dhoni holds the record of captaining a team in 33 matches that covered every game and every edition. He was the captain of the T20 format from 2007-2017.

10. Most Runs Scored

The leading batter to hold a record for most runs is Mahela Jayawardene, who has scored 1016 runs (31 matches) across every edition. He has  scored an average of 3007 runs per match.

11. Most Runs Against Pakistan

Virat Kohli is the first batter to have scored more than 500 runs against Pakistan in the limited-overs format. He achieved the feat against Pakistan in 2021.

12. Most Successful Team 

Winning two T20 titles, West Indies is the most successful team. They won their first title in 2012 and then again  in 2016.

13. Players With Most Ducks

Pakistan’s Shahid Afridi has the most number of duck dismissals in the T20 World cup.
