1. A floating post office – India is the largest postal network of the world with over 1,55,015 post offices. A single post office in India on an average serves a population of about 7175 people. The floating post office is located in the Dal Lake, Srinagar and was inaugurated in August 2011. Since then it has been a major tourist attraction spot. While it is a boon to the state tourism, the post office is also like a tribute to the beautiful and mesmerising Dal Lake.      

2. Kumbh Mela gathering visible from the space – In the year 2011, the Kumbh Mela gathering was about 75 million of people. The gathering was at such a massive scale that it was visible from the space. The Mela was set up at a sacred location on the Ganges River, 15kms from Allahabad, for more than a month of bathing rituals. The one-meter resolution image of the Maha Kumbh Mela was captured by Space imagining Ikonos satellite, which travels at a speed of 4 miles per second and revolves in an orbit 423 miles above the earth.

3. The wettest inhabited place of the world – Mawsynram, a village located on the Khasi Hills, Meghalaya, receives the highest recorded average rainfall in the world. Cherrapunji, a part of Meghalaya, holds the record of the most rainfall in the calendar year of 1861. The area receives an annual rainfall of 11,871 meters. This large volume of rain is caused because of the Himalayan ranges blocking the heavy clouds’ escaping to the north.

4. The highest cricket ground in the world – Located at an altitude of 2,444 meters, the Chail Cricket ground, in Chail, Himachal Pradesh, is the highest in the world. It was built in the year 1893 and is a part of Chail Military School. The Chail Cricket Ground is surrounded by forest land, which is characterised by a majority of deodar and chail pine trees that can be found on all sides of the cricket playing area. Because of its remote location far from the traffic and businesses of Shimla, the state capital, this area is also a popular destination for nature lovers, hikers and cyclists!

5. The Indian national Kabaddi team has won all World Cups – The Indian national Kabaddi team has won all 5 men’s Kabaddi world cups held till date. The Indian women’s team has also won all Kabaddi world cups held till now.

6. Water on the moon was discovered by India – In September 2009, India’s ISRO Chandrayan-1 using its Moon Mineralogy Mapper detected the presence of water for the first time.

7. The first rocket in India was transported on a cycle   The first rocket was so light and small that it was transported on a cycle to the Thumba Launching Station located in Thiruvananthapuram, Kerala in the early 1960s, Dr Vikram Sarabhai selected a small fishing village called Thumba in Trivandrum as the ideal location for a rocket launching station. The spot he had zeroed in as a potential launching site housed a church.

St Mary Magdalene Church was located on Earth’s magnetic equator, an imaginary line where the Equatorial Electrojet exists. This had stirred Dr Sarabhai’s interest.

8. India is the world’s second-largest English speaking country   India is the second only country in the world to compete with the United States when it comes to speaking English with around 125 million of people speaking the language, which is only 10% of India’s population. This is further expected to grow by quite a margin in the coming years!

9. The human calculator   The Indian female Shakuntala Devi was given the title of a human calculator after she demonstrated the calculation of two 13 digit numbers: 7,686,369,774,870 x 2,465,369,774,870 which were picked at random. She answered these correctly within 28 seconds.

10. India is the origin of Diamonds – It was in India where diamonds were found in the alluvial deposits in Guntur and Krishna District of the Krishna River delta. Until they were found in Brazil during the 18th century, India led the world in diamond production.
